How to Buy Richly Scented Candles

How to Buy Richly Scented CandlesWhat, the grocery store?  No, you can't buy richly scented candles at your local grocery or department store.  If you've tried, you've probably had the following experience:

You're actually at the store to buy something else, but a candle display catches your eye.  Jars containing candles of all colors and scents are lined up, ready for sniffing.

You pick up a jar, open it and breathe in deeply.  Ahhh!  You take your treasure to the checkout line.

After you arrive home, you put your new candle in a place of honor and light it.  It smells soooo good!  You smile and go about your business

A little while later, you stop.  Something's missing.  The scent is gone!  You hurry over to the candle, sure that the flame went out.  No, it's still burning, but the wonderful smell is nowhere to be sniffed.

Definitely not what you'd call a scent-sational experience.

Where to Buy Richly Scented Candles

They are a little hard to find, these highly fragranced wonders, but they are available.  But where are they?  How can you buy them?

Offline

If you really need to do a "sniff test", your best bets for where to buy richly scented candles in person include the following.

  • The "everyday" brand that I've had the most luck with is Yankee Candle.  The scent lasts longer than any other store brand I've come across.  The biggest disadvantage is the (usually) limited number of fragrances usually available in any given store.
  • Candle home parties.  Yes, there are candle companies out there where you can buy richly scented candles in a party atmosphere.  Although not widely found, the parties are wonderful and the scents are varied and heady. Prices are generally very reasonable.

Surprisingly, candle and bath shops tend to not have candles with long-lasting scents.  Unless of course they happen to carry Yankee Candle.

Online

If you have an adventurous spirit, buying candles online gives you a wide range of options to buy.  Some companies with good reputations include:

  • Candle Bay.  Several choices for soy-wax candles.  Some unusual scents are available (anjou pear and white chocolate anyone?).  The lines include Erome (premium) and Therepe (discount). Ok, the discount scented candle line isn't exactly what I could call long-lasting as far as scent goes, but being soy, it tends to last at least a bit longer than average.
  • Yankee Candle.  Yes, they are online as well as offline!  So if you're hooked on a specific scent they make and can't find it locally, this is a good bet for you. The prices run the same online as you see them in the stores.
  • Shop Scented Candles.  Carrying one of the most famous names in the gourmet candle business; the store has over 90 scents available.  Tripe-scented, made with vegetable wax and extremely clean burning.  (Now I'll admit to being a little prejudiced as this is my own store, but I honestly think these are the best on the market...and I've tried a lot!)  Click here is you want a personal review of some of the scents before you go shopping. You can also request a free scent sample.

Once you have them at home, enjoy the experience of a beautifully fragranced candle!

Candle Trivia

What's the difference between a lamp (oil-burning) and a candle?

If the fuel remains liquid at room temperature, it's an oil lamp.

If the fuel remains solid at room temperature, it's a candle.

Where Does the Word Candle Come From?

The word "candle" is derived from the Latin words candela and candere.

Candela means a light or a torch.

Candere means to shine or be bright.
